What are REAL threats to the family? by Jeff Case

Guest author Jeff Case, a gay man who’s still active in the LDS church, says:

“When I hear members use 'threat to the family' as a euphemism [for] the LGBTQ community's seeking civil rights, I remind them of what the actual threats are to their families. The families of those sitting in the room that day were at risk [for] a different set of reasons than [the ones] they were implying: excessive debt, domestic violence, various forms of abuse, infidelity, etc. [The threat is] not, in fact, the pursuit of civil rights by the LGBTQ community. The only threat that I am to my congregation by being out and vocal is that sometimes I push people into evaluating their assumptions" (as quoted in Richard Ostler’s Listen, Learn & Love, 199, quoted with permission).

Jeff adds, “I think it’s important to have real conversations about what is attacking families in our world. To claim that LGBTQ civil liberties are ‘attacking families’ is to ignore the primary reasons for families breaking up.”
