(You donate, Marci and Evan contribute socks to homeless LGBTQ youth!)

Announcing . . .  (drum roll, please) . . . #CrossroadsSockChallenge! From now through #GivingTuesday on Dec. 1, make a donation of any size to the organization of your choice that supports LGBTQ people in any way.

Then, either post on social media using #CrossroadsSockChallenge, or email Marci (marcimcpheewriter@gmail.com) if you prefer to keep a lower profile. No need to say the amount – just “I donated to (organization) for #CrossroadsSockChallenge!”

For every any-size contribution, Marci and Evan will each donate a sock to San Antonio-based Thrive Youth Center at Haven for Hope, which supports individuals experiencing homelessness (many of whom are LGBTQ teens disowned by their families). Thrive Youth Center provides supportive services, life skills and housing for LGBTQ youth age 18-24, plus housing for any homeless youth. With Marci and Evan each donating a sock, that’s a pair of socks for your any-size donation to any non-profit! Yes, you can donate to multiple organizations and rack up more socks!

Looking for a good organization that supports LGBTQ folks? Here are some of Evan’s favorites:

  • Affirmation - A non-profit working to connect, uplift, and empower lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer Mormons and their allies around the world from all along the spectrums of sexual orientation, gender identity, faith, and involvement with the church.

  • Beyond the Block – Weekly podcast where James C. Jones and Derek Knox, a Black life-long member and queer convert, respectively, discuss that the inner thrust for justice, love, and salvation for all people, regardless of color, sex, orientation, and other identities is not only consistent with the message of Christ, but it *is* the message of Christ.

  • Encircle seeks to deepen and enrich the conversation among communities of faith and LGBTQ+ people. By teaching individuals to love themselves and empowering families, Encircle helps cultivate an environment where LGBTQ+ individuals can thrive. Locations in Provo, SLC, and St. George, Utah.

  • Latter Gay Stories – A podcast and resource center about the intersection of sexuality and reality, including an amazing collection of all quotes on LGBTQ matters from General Authorities since the time of Joseph Smith, compiled by manager Kyle Ashworth. It can be a triggering history to read, but it is crucial to understanding church history and efforts to avoid the mistakes of the past.

  • Mama Dragons support, educate, and empower mothers of LGBTQ children.

  • Peculiar - Resource and networking to inspire and empower parents and families to unconditionally love and embrace their LGBTQ+ children.

Don’t feel limited by this list! Donate to any organization that supports LGBTQ folks, and Marci and Evan will each donate a sock to Thrive at Haven. Be sure to use the hashtag #CrossroadsSockChallenge or email Marci at marcimcpheewriter@gmail.com.

Donate by #GivingTuesday (Dec. 1) to join the challenge. Thanks for giving -- and Happy Thanksgiving from your friends at Gay LDS Crossroads Blog.
