Soundtrack for Pride Month – write your own verses!

The unofficial anthem for the LGBTQ movement is Holly Near’s “Singing for our Lives.” Holly composed the song in November 1978 when she heard of the assassination of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California.

It’s a simple song that lends itself to adaptation. That means it’s an invitation for YOU to write your own verses! Here are some of the verses we’ve heard:

  • “We are gentle, loving people, and we are singing, singing for our lives (repeat).”

  • “We are gentle, angry people, and we are singing, singing for our lives (repeat).”

  • “We are gay and straight together, and we are singing, singing for our lives (repeat).”

  • “We are a land of many colors, and we are singing, singing for our lives (repeat).”

What verses come to YOUR mind? Comment below!

Happy Pride Month, y’all! (And y’all means all!) Be who you are, this month and every month.
