More conflicting instructions: “Be honest” but “don’t talk about being queer”
We talked earlier about how to think about conflicting commandments, specifically “It’s not good to be alone” vs. “No gay marriage.” (Bottom line - go with love.)
Here’s another set of conflicting instructions: “Be honest” — ranking right up there as one of the Ten Commandments and temple recommend questions. But queer folks are often asked to stay closeted and not talk about their sexuality or gender identity, to avoid rocking the boat, not inconvenience anyone, and keep the straight folks comfortable. That is, “be honest, as long as you stay within these artificial boundaries that have nothing to do with you.”
Ugh.
Everyone’s right to full human dignity is not subject to others’ comfort level. BE YOURSELF. YOUR WHOLE SELF.
That being said, you can be honest with yourself and still be private if you’re not ready to come out. Self-care first. You deserve it.
